Surveying Areas Affected by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) – Update

Written by jorupacs on . Posted in Featured News, November 2013, Relief Operation

xcentral_philippinesErwin one of our members has left and he will be joined by a Pastor from Naga City. They will seek to rent a truck there and fill with relief goods to take by road and cross on the ferry to SAMAR.  Erwin is from Samar and they will seek to go to small towns not yet really visited. They will also seek to contact churches in the area. This is really a survey mission with others expect to join a team eventually there.

Second team of 2 members from the island of Leyte are seeking to get to Cebu city by plane. They could not get a booking until Monday.  They will then also get a truck there and relief goods to take to Leyte.  Both men are from Leyte and they will seek to contact churches they know there and assess how best we can help.

We also need to send someone to Aklan. Which is in western visayas.  North of Iloilo.  This area, Capiz and norther part of province of Iloilo were also affected. We have at last made contact and hear of the destruction of the RB Church building in Kalibo.  We will be seeking to help them rebuild but we need to contact others in the area.

We have members very concerned about family members in this area as well.

There is a team of 5 coming from the USA. The leader has experience of relief work in India and they come from a RB Church in Texas. I know the pastor. We will try and help them get to the areas affected and provide translators.

Value greatly your prayers. This is going to be a long operation because of the need to rebuild lives as well as homes.  We are beginning to collect clothing and anything we can ship to replace lost things. Churches will be helping in this way.

Thank you everyone for your prayers.

Surveying Areas Affected by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan)

Central Philippines

We have two teams consisting of two men in each basically doing a survey but also hopefully taking a truck load of relief goods into the areas most affected by the typhoon.  They leave today or tomorrow.  Two are going to the island of Leyte and hoping to contact churches in the central part of the island and the west coast.  The two men going there are from that area.  That is where the City of Tacloban is located.

The second group is going to the island of Samar where many small towns and villages are still cut off and no news.  The man leading that group is from that place as well.  Again they hope to be able to take a truck of relief goods in there.  This is basically a survey team which will be followed up by a larger group of our members very soon.

There are also other islands in need of help and we hope to contact churches in some of the other badly hit areas.  We seek to work through the local evangelical churches in those areas in the distribution of relief goods also medicines as well as seeking to
proclaim the hope of the gospel.  However this is going to be long term relief work as millions are without homes.

Relief Team from the USA

We were also contacted by Grace Community Church in San Antonio Texas (a Reformed Baptist Church in Texas) to discuss the possibility of then sending a team to help with the relief efforts.

Please continue to pray for wisdom as we desire to elevate men in the misery of this tragedy and also to call them into the Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Praise & Thanksgiving:

1.        The Camp for the Homeless (Drop-in Camp) was a blessed time with no untoward incidents as have happened in the past. Please pray that the word preached and also heard in the bible study groups will bring forth fruit unto eternal life.

2.        We thank the Lord for our young people who were able to attend the YP Camp. Again may the Lord bless the ministry there to their salvation.

3.        The Drop-in staff and volunteers had an overnight retreat at Sierra Madre Resort. They discussed and evaluated the drop in camp ministry and found it very beneficial and believe their commitment was very worth while.

4.        Thanks for the CRBC day-outing on 26th October at Antipolo. Pastor Mon lead the devotion on “Endeavoring to keep the unity of the church”.  We do thank the Lord for the unity we do experience by the grace of God.

5.        For the addition to the membership by transfer from the UK of Dr Carmela Espaniola.

Prayer Requests:

1.        The opening of the new semester of GMA on the 12th. Ian Densham once more will be with us taking a modular class on the Pentateuch from the 19th – 28th.  He arrives on the 13th

2.        Please also pray for the Friday Night Bible Class beginning on the 15th and conducted by Pastor Espinosa which is open to all.  May a good number again attend from different churches.

3.        Analyn Ablao has taken over as Officer in Charge of the CCM Children’s  Homes while we say farewell to Virgie Biala Sparrow who will be joining her husband in the UK. Please pray for both of them in their adjustment to their new responsibilities.

4.        We are still very much in need of Social Workers in CCM. Please pray that the Lord will bring the right people to us who can join our dedicated staff.

5.        Drop-in Thursday night meeting will celebrate its 10th year anniversary on the 14th. Brother Matt Gamston will be the speaker.

6.        We are planning a special Couples’ Fellowship on the 30th. May it be a blessed time of fellowship and encouragement.

7.        One of the girls in CCM homes, Jennalyn Banzuelo, has formally applied for church membership. Please pray for wisdom in assessing her profession of faith.

8.        The Lord willing, brother Larry Malabayabas will be formally ordained as interim pastor of Providence Baptist church, Tondo on the 17th of this month.

9.        Last month Noelyn one of our older girls in the CCM Homes suddenly died in her sleep of a heart attack . This has been a great shock to all. However from the writing in her journal we have much hope that she was the Lord’s. Please pray for her father and sibilings, (2 of her brothers are with CCM). Pray also that the Lord will use her sudden death to awaken our children and young people to their great need of the Saviour of sinners.

Effect of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) and CRBC’s Relief Work

Tacloban Survivors (Photo courtesy of the Philippine Daily Inquirer)
Manila was not affected by the Typhoon but areas in central Philippines were terrible devastated.

The worst affected area is in northern Leyte and particularly the City of Tacloban as well as parts of the large island of Samar. It is very difficult at the moment to get any personal news except what is coming over on the News Channels.

However other areas are also affected and needing help such as northern Panay, Bohol and parts of Cebu. There are Reformed Baptist churches in these areas.

Some of the members of Cubao Reformed Baptist Church have family members in these areas. We are seeking to contact them and learn more of how we can help. However in many areas communications are down.

CRBC and our CCM Foundation will be seeking to help with relief. We cannot do much at the present moment due to lack of communications almost everywhere in the typhoon affected areas. Travel is also very restricted as airports are closed and bridges and roads affected. However relief will be needed in the long term as well as the immediate needs which the government and major relief organizations are seeking to meet.

We are sending two of our members to give us better information. One of them is from the major affected area.

CRBC/CCM Relief work however seeks to work with local churches, first those which are Reformed Baptist and then other evangelical churches. We send a small team  to work with the church and its members in distributing relief goods. The gospel is also preached by our team. The extent of the present needs seem to be vast and long term relief work may well be needed as many homes have been destroyed over a vast swath of the country in many provinces. Only slowly are needs being made known.

Be assured we shall be seeking to help in any way we can. Our particularly concern is also to help fellow believers who are in desperate need but also any to whom we can be of help and comfort.

If you wish to help with donations please send money through Christian Compassion Ministries.

Relief work for those affected by typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan)

Initial planning for the relief work headed by Deacon Louie Lim

Initial planning for the relief work headed by Deacon Louie Lim

Below is a statement of Pastor Brian Ellis about the recent typhoon that swept in central Philippines:

Dear Brethren

We are getting inquiries from many people about the Typhoon.

This was one of the most destructive ever according to news channels.

It did not affect Manila area but went through the Central Philippines.

Communications are down, no electricity in those areas due to poles down etc. Therefore we
have had no contact with churches or brethren in those areas. We are praying for them and
seeking to try to contact them but nothing as of the Lord’s Day morning (November 10, 2013).

We value your prayers as we seek to find out ways particularly to help our Christian brethren
and churches.

Thank you for your loving concern and prayers.

Brian Ellis

Since 2009, Cubao Reformed Baptist Church (CRBC) together with its benevolent arm, Christian Compassion Ministries, engages in relief operation work for those that were heavily affected by typhoon in the Philippines.  This was made possible by the donation of churches, friends and believers from abroad.  CRBC in turn reaches these affected places and distribute relief in accordance to the needs of the people which is usually food, portable water and medicine.  The Lord has been gracious by giving us churches who we can partner with in this endeavor to ensure that the relief items are given to those who are in real need but most especially to deliver the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and open the Word of God to tell people the will of God in this trying times.  As we once again look unto the Lord to help those who are badly affected, the church is planning to send relief to Tacloban, Leyte, where news reports says is 95% destroyed by the typhoon.  We do value your prayers for this work. Soli Deo Gloria!
